Smurfs Party Supplies are based on The Smurfs, a comic book series created by Peyo. The Smurfs comics were the basis of the animated TV series made in 1980s as well as the American 3D family film made in 2011. The movie stars Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Hank Azaria, and Sofía Vergara. The movie is directed by Raja Gosnell and is the first CGI/live-action hybrid film that is produced by Sony Pictures Animation. The movie was known as The Smurfs Movie during the early production.

Initially, Jordan Kerner had bought the film rights in 2002 (after five years of negotiations) and was trying to make the film with Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures. But later, in 2008, Sony Pictures Animation and Columbia Pictures got the film rights and in March 2010, the filming was started in New York City.

The Smurfs was released on July 29, 2011 by Columbia Pictures after changing the release date three times. The movie was declared as a box office success.

The plot of the movie is quite interesting. The Smurfs are getting ready for the Blue Moon Festival. Papa Smurf sees some visions when he is in his home. He sees that the Smurfs are in cages, Gargamel has become powerful. He also sees Clumsy Smurf holding a dragon wand. Papa Smurf decides to stop Clumsy from picking Smurf Roots, but Clumsy secretly picks them anyway. Gargamel sees him and goes after him into the village. All the Smurfs run away and Clumsy enters into a forbidden cave. Papa Smurf, along with Gutsy, Grouchy, Smurfette, and Brainy see him entering the cave and run after him. They locate him at the edge of a cliff and try to pull him up. But in the process, they get sucked into a giant vortex, and reach New York. There they meet a married and expectant couple, Patrick and Grace. They become friends and are allowed to stay in their apartment.

Papa Smurf comes to know that in a couple nights he will be able to get them all home. But, to do so, he must find out the spell to do so. Patrick informs them that in the city there is an old book store that may have a spell book. They reach there and start searching for a spell book and ultimately the book containing the spell and it is one of their own comic books! Gargamel comes to know about their location and he enters the book store and steals a dragon wand from there and uses it to abduct Papa. Although the Smurfs promise Papa not to try to save him, Clumsy stays behind, and along with Patrick, plans a rescue. Other Smurfs, too, agree to help.

Gargamel plans to become more powerful than anything else in the world by removing the Smurf essence from Papa and charging it into the dragon wand. Patrick and the Smurfs fight with Gargamel. Meanwhile Smurfette saves Papa. Brainy opens up the portal by reading the spell and goes home to round up his friends. They come back to join the fight. Papa is captured again by Gargamel and he throws him into the air. Patrick saves Papa by catching him. As Gargmel is about to destroy them both using the dragon wand, Gutsy knocks it out of his hand. Clumsy runs to catch it and Papa thinks that he won't succeed. But Papa is surprised when Clumsy manages to catch it.

Gargamel is powerless without the dragon wand. Papa destroys it once and for all. The Smurfs return home. Patrick and Grace are gifted with a baby boy. They name him Blue. The Smurfs rebuild their houses. Their houses resemble the houses made by humans.

In the movie, Neil Patrick Harris is cast as Patrick Winslow, Jayma Mays as Grace Winslow and Hank Azaria as Gargamel. Apart from these main characters, Sofía Vergara is cast as Odile, Tim Gunn as Henri. Joan Rivers, Liz Smith, Tom Colicchio, Olivia Palermo and Michael Musto also have played important roles in the movie.

Regarding voice actors, Jonathan Winters has provided voice for Papa Smurf, Katy Perry for Smurfette, Fred Armisen for Brainy Smurf, Alan Cumming for Gutsy Smurf, Anton Yelchin for Clumsy Smurf, George Lopez for Grouchy Smurf, Jeff Foxworthy for Handy Smurf, Paul Reubens for Jokey Smurf, Gary Basaraba for Hefty Smurf, John Oliver for Vanity Smurf, Kenan Thompson for Greedy Smurf, B. Sony Pictures Animation has announced a sequel to the movie on August 9, 2011. The script of the movie is already complete and the movie will be released on August 2, 2013.
