When a trainer comes across a wild Pokemon, he can try to capture it by throwing a specially designed spherical Poke Ball. If the Pokemon cannot escape the Poke Ball, the trainer becomes the master of it. Now, it has to obey all the commands of the owner. The captured pokemon will act on its own if the new master is totally inexperienced and cannot control the pokemon.

The trainers can send the captured Pokemon to fight battles with the other Pokemon. If the opponent is a wild Pokemon, the trainer can again use the Poke Ball and capture it and thus increase his collection of captured Pokemon. Except in some games under special circumstances, the Pokemon that have already been captured by other trainers cannot be captured.

If a Pokemon knocks out his opponent in the battle, the winner Pokemon gains extra experience and may level up. When a Pokemon gets to a new level, his battling aptitude (like speed and attack) increases. Pokemon learn new battle techniques and moves from time to time.

There is a concept of evolution in Pokemon. There are some species of Pokemon that have the ability to transform into stronger species of similar type. 

In the game, each player (the trainer) has to create an army of Pokemon and try to defeat the opponents. In each game there are eight other trainers (called Gym Leaders) that have to be defeated in order to progress. The reward of defeating each Gym Leader is a Gym Badge and the player has to collect all the eight badges by defeating all the eight Gym Leaders. When all the eight Gym leaders are defeated, the player has to challenge the "Elite Four", the four super talented trainers of the region's Pokemon League. If the player is successful in defeating the four trainers in four successive battles, he is eligible to challenge the Regional Champion, who has previously defeated the Elite Four. If the player is able to defeat the Regional Champion as well, he is declared the new champion and is provided the title, Pokemon Master.
