The pirates decided that a ransom of twenty talents of gold would be demanded to free Caeser. But Ceasar strongly objected to their decision and convinced them that he was worth a lot more and that they should demand at least fifty talents. The pirates agreed and raised their ransom amount to fifty talents. The ransom was paid and Caeaser was set free. As soon as Caesar was released, he collected a fleet, chased the pirates and captured them. He then had them crucified.

In 258 AD, the towns on the coasts of the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea were frequently ravaged by the Gothic-Herulic fleet. In 264 AD, they reached Cyprus and Crete and looted a lot of wealth and took thousands of people into captivity. In 286 AD, Frankish and Saxon pirates were raiding the coasts of Belgic Gaul and Armorica. Saint Patrick was enslaved by Irish pirates in the Roman province of Britannia.

At one time, the Madagascar's population of pirated had reached around 1000. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Ile Sainte-Marie was a popular base for pirates. In the late 17th century, Captain Misson and his pirate crew founded the free colony of Libertatia in northern Madagascar. The colony was destroyed in 1694 in a surprise attack by the natives of the island.

During the 1840s and 1850s, many battles were fought between the United States Navy and Royal Navy forces and the Chinese pirates.

One of the notable pirates of the 20th Century was Boysie Singh, who, along with his pirate gang operated off northern South America from 1947 to 1956 and killed many people and looted their ships.
