Pink Cowgirl Party
Supplies are based on Cowgirls, women who work on cattle ranches. Unlike Cowboys, the history of
Cowgirls is not well documented. But, in the recent years, National Cowgirl Museum, Hall of Fame and other
institutions are making significant efforts and have been gathering and documenting the contributions of
Cowgirls.
But in the Old West girls or women
used to work as Cowgirls. They had to. Apart from driving cattle up the cattle trails, they used to do
considerable ranch work. At that time, men had to go to war. Also, they went on long cattle drives. Then, it
was women, who ran the ranches by working as a Cowgirl. Then, there were families who owned small ranches.
They could not afford to hire outside laborers. Their wives and daughters and other ladies of the family had
to work side by side with men. Thus, they needed to ride horses and perform related tasks and work as
Cowgirls.
The sidesaddle was a tool that was
used by the Cowgirls to ride horses. Although sidesaddle was impractical for everyday work, using it the
Cowgirls were able to ride horses in "respectable" public settings. Earlier, the women used to reach to their
destinations either by foot or horse-drawn vehicles. After the Civil War, Charles Goodnight created a
western-styled sidesaddle by modifying the design of the traditional English
sidesaddle.
The world came to know and admire
Cowgirls due to the Wild West Shows. The girls in the show were skilled performers. They demonstrated trick
roping, expert marksmanship and riding skills to entertain the audiences around the world. The most famous
Cowgirl of the Wild West Shows was Annie Oakley.
During the 1900s, Victorian
audiences looked down upon the ladies who wear men's clothing or bloomers. So, skirts split were created for
them that allowed them to compete with the men without hurting the feelings of the audiences. Skirts split
were quite popular during the period.
In the early 20th century and
later, many movies were made with Cowgirls as the central character making them more popular in the culture.
To show the girls riding horses, the movie designers created dresses that were attractive as well as suitable
for riding Western saddles. Pink was used widely for dresses and hence the term, "Pink Cowgirl", was
created.
Rodeo competitions made rodeo
cowgirls famous. In these competitions as well as Wild West shows, women used to take part in all events.
Sometimes they competed against other women, sometimes against men. They were women who thrived on
competition and challenge. Fannie Sperry Steele was a famous Pink Cowgirl who performed the same tricks and
took the same risks as the men. She used to wear a heavy split skirt that was more restraining than the
trousers that the men wore. She used to compete at major rodeos like Cheyenne Frontier Days and Calgary
Stampede.
In the 1920s several factors led to
changes in rodeo competition for women. After 1925, indoor places like Madison Square Garden were used to
stage rodeos. Many of the women's events were dropped and women were excluded from the men's events. People
did not want to witness women getting killed or seriously injured. Women's bronc riding was eliminated from
rodeo competition after the death of Bonnie McCarroll at the 1929 Pendleton
Round-Up.
Today's cowgirls normally use
equipment, clothing and tools same as used by men. The only difference is the design and color, pink being
the main color. Today's cowgirls prefer a flashier look and love being called Pink Cowgirl. They wear jeans,
shirts (mostly close-fitting) or T-shirts, boots (generally pink-and-gold riding boots) and hat. They also
wear gloves and chaps, as and when required. They do exactly the same jobs as cowboys when they work on a
ranch and they dress accordingly. They can pop a bullwhip, gentle a horse, plow a field, use the pistol and
paint a watercolor.
Cowgirl has become synonym to
courage, independence, willingness to embrace challenges, taking risks, spirit of self-reliance, resilience
and appreciation of the ideals. Cowgirls face life head on, take stands, speak up, make no excuses and live
by their own lights.
Today, Cowgirl is an attitude. The
lives of Cowgirls helped shape the American West. They were women who stepped up, not aside. These
fascinating women lived life their way. They pushed frontiers in their own way. They remind us what each
woman can be.
