Little Mermaid Party Supplies are based on a fairy tale, "The Little Mermaid", written by the Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen. The story is about a young mermaid who is willing to give up her identity as a mermaid and her life in the sea to gain a human soul and the love of a human prince. The Little Mermaid was written originally as a ballet and was first published in 1837. Since then it has been adapted to various media including animated film and musical theatre.

The plot of the tale is very interesting. The Little Mermaid resides in an underwater kingdom. She has the most intoxicating voice in the world. Her father is the sea king. She lives with her five elder sisters and her grandmother. Each of her sisters is born one year apart. In the kingdom whenever a mermaid turns 15, she is allowed to go to the surface and watch the world above. When her sisters start reaching the age of 15, they swim to the surface and each of them narrates various descriptions of the human beings found on the surface. The Little Mermaid listens to those tales and is eager to visit the surface.

When the Little Mermaid turns 15, she swims to the surface. There she sees a prince on a ship and instantly falls in love with him. At the same time a great storm hits the ship and the prince starts drowning. The Little Mermaid saves his life and while the prince is unconscious she brings him to a temple and delivers him to a young girl from the temple. Because the prince was unconscious, he doesn't see the Little Mermaid.

The Little Mermaid returns to her kingdom and asks her grandmother whether humans can live forever. The grandmother tells her that while merfolk can live up to 300 years, humans live for a much shorter period. She further explains that when mermaids die they disintegrate into sea foam but when humans die, their eternal soul lives on in Heaven. The Little Mermaid is now longing for the prince and an eternal soul so she visits the Sea Witch and buys a potion that would give her legs, in exchange for her tongue. The Sea Witch warns that if she drinks the potion she won't be able to return to her kingdom. She also tells her that although she would be able to dance with her legs more beautifully than any human has ever danced, her feet will bleed and she would constantly feel pain like swords are cutting his feet. Also, she would be able to get the eternal soul only if she is able to find true love and prince weds her. If the prince weds another woman, she would die the next dawn and would turn into sea foam.

The Little Mermaid drinks the potion. She meets the prince and even though she is mute, he is attracted to her beauty. He loves her dance and she dances despite her pain. The king orders the prince to marry the princess of the neighboring kingdom. The prince explains to the mermaid that he will only marry the girl at the temple who saved his life. It turns out that the temple girl is the princess who was sent there for education. The prince marries the princess.

The Little Mermaid is heartbroken and she waits for her death at the dawn. But before dawn, her sisters arrive. They had bought a knife from the Sea Witch in exchange of their beautiful hair. If the Little Mermaid kills the prince with the knife and let the blood fall on her feet, she will turn into a mermaid again, she will live out her full life and all her sufferings will end.

The Little Mermaid loves the prince so much that she is unable to kill the prince. The dawn breaks and she throws herself into the sea. Her body turns into foam, but instead of ceasing to exist, she turns into a spirit, a daughter of the air. Now she will earn her own soul by doing good deeds.
