The job of a knight was to protect the weak, helpless, defenseless and to stand up for the general welfare of all. Chivalry was the main requirement of a knight and the three main areas that the code of chivalry dealt with were the military, social life, and religion. The main duties of a medieval knight just these; but were very hard to accomplish fully. The best of knights could also achieve these goals rarely. Knights had to train in hunting, riding and fighting.

For knights, their military life was the most important. There were many rules and customs that the knights had to follow along with the fighting elements of battle. Knights had to own heavy and expensive weapons. Apart from weaponry, horses were also extremely important for a knight. Each knight owned not one but many horses; and all were to serve distinct purposes. Knights are also famous for flying the colored banners to distinguish themselves and to display power and authority in wars and in tournaments; and it was considered one of the great signs of chivalry. Apart from owning these belongings to prove their power, knights had to behave with military courtesy as well.

In battles, when knights were taken prisoner, they were not sentenced to death, they were held for ransom. Also, they were kept in comfortable surroundings than the normal prisoners.

In the medieval era becoming a knight was not an easily achievable goal but knighthood was conferred upon to the sons of knights. Although other young men were also eligible to become knights, it was almost impossible for the lowest class people to attain the goal. Future knights were singled out at their very young age and were sent to palaces and castles as pages. Later they were promoted to squires. At the age of around 20 they were made knights in a grand ceremony. They had to abide by the code of chivalry at all times without any failure.
