The size of the football is 28 inches (71 cm) in circumference in FIFA matches. For the international adult matches the length of the pitch is 110–120 yd (100-110 m) and the width is usually 70–80 yd (64–75 m). For non-international matches the field can be 100–130 yd (91–120 m) in length and 50–101 yd (45–91 m) in width, but the field should never become square. There are boundary lines around the field, called the touch lines. There are another lines inside the boundary lines called the goal lines. A goal post is placed at the center of the goal line. Goal posts are rectangular in shape and must be 8 ft (2.44 m) in height. Nets may or may not be placed behind the goal posts.

There is a penalty area in front of the goal posts, marked by the goal lines. The goal lines start 18 yd (16.5 m) from the goal posts and extend up to 18 yd (16.5 m) in the pitch, perpendicular to the goal lines. This is the area up to which the goalkeeper can handle the ball. This is the area where the referee can award the penalty kick for a penalty foul. 

Each team has a captain who leads the game. He is involved in the toss of the coin that happens before that start of the game and at the penalty shootout.

The football players have to wear a shirt, shorts, footwear with socks and shin guards. Today, some players wear headgear to protect themselves from head injury, although as per the soccer laws, it is not a required equipment. Anything that could be dangerous to themselves or other players is forbidden to wear. This includes watches and jewelry. The dress of the goalkeeper should be different from the other players and the match referees, so that he can be easily distinguished.

There is a concept of substitute players in football. Players can be replaced by other players during the game. The reason may be anything; one of the players could have been injured, or he might have been tired, or he would have been ineffective at a particular time, he could have been wasting time at an important phase of the match or it may simply be a tactical switch. In the most league games, only three players can be substituted. Also, once a player is substituted, he cannot take part in the rest of the game.

The authority of the game is a referee, who is further assisted by two assistant referees. In many games there is a fourth referee as well. He is also used as replacement for another official if the need arises. The referee has total authority in the game in enforcing the game laws and ensuring that the game runs smoothly and according to the soccer laws.
