Fire trucks also carry ladders. These help them to reach to the fire in the high-rise buildings and to bring down the injured. They also have hooks to pull apart the walls to reach to the source of the fire as well as to break windows glass.

Some of the fire trucks use IFEX (impulse fire-extinguishing) system to fight the fire. In this system the water is pressurized highly so that it gets converted into a vaporous mist. This, when sprayed, creates a cooling effect and is more effective than using the water alone.

Some of the more modern fire trucks are equipped with a system that mixes foam in the water, creating a foamy effect that is more efficient, and it reduces the wastage of water and cuts down the time taken to put out a fire.

The first modern fire engine was constructed in 1905 by Knox Automobile that is based in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was based on the standard truck model.
