Those who were present in heaven remained angels and those who were present in hell at that time became devils. But those who were caught in between became fairies. Another twist in the story is that because of their revolt they were thrown out of heaven as they were considered not good enough for heaven, but they were not evil enough for hell, so they were made fairies.

The fourth belief is that fairies were entirely demons.

According to one belief they were actually humans and according to one folktale a woman had hid some of her kids from God. But later, when she started looking for them she could not find them because they had become the fairies, the hidden people.

The Little White Bird, a J. M. Barrie's 1902 novel, in a chapter about Peter Pan, describes a story about the origin of fairies. According to it when a newborn baby laughed for the first time, his laughter broke into a million pieces and all of them became fairies.
