Extreme Sports Party
Supplies are based on extreme sports, also known as adventure sports, action sports and freesports. The
term "Extreme Sports" is used for those activities that are perceived as having a very high level of inherent
danger. Extreme sports can take place in air, land, or water. These sports involve speed, height, spectacular
stunts, highly specialized gear and a high level of physical exertion.
However, it is very difficult to
classify a sport as extreme sport according to its definition. The best example would be road cycling sport.
According to studies, road cycling ranks at the top for the number of injuries, but it is not classified into
extreme sport. The reason may be that it is not counter-cultural.
It is also unclear as how the term
"Extreme Sports" originated. But it became popular when the marketing companies picked it up for the
promotion of the X Games in 1990s. X Games is a multi-sport event that is created and developed by ESPN. The
first X Games were organized in the United States in Newport, Providence, Mount Snow, and Vermont and this
event was known as 1995 Extreme Games.
Although the consideration of a
sport as being 'extreme' is extremely debatable, there are several characteristics that are common to most
extreme sports. First of all, extreme sports are mainly for the youth, although there is no restriction for
others to participate. Extreme sports are normally never sanctioned by schools. Extreme sports are normally
performed solo. Some of the notable exceptions to the previous characteristic are rafting and paintballing as
they are played/performed in teams. Also, extreme newbies start working on their sport on their own (without
a coach's guidance), although, some hire a coach later.
Extreme sports are different from
traditional sports due to the higher number of uncontrollable variables. In these activities, the
participants not only compete against other participants, but also against environmental challenges and
obstacles. These variables are mainly terrain and weather relates, like, snow, wind, mountains and water.
Because these natural variables cannot be controlled, they inevitably affect the result of the given activity
or event. For example, snowboarders have to face changing snow conditions, climbers have to negotiate rock
and ice quality and the surfers have to face wave height and shape.
In traditional sports, the judgment
criteria is the assessment of the performance in the terms of distance, time, score, etc., but in extreme
sports the performance of a participant is assessed on aesthetic and more subjective
criteria.
Nine air sports are classified into
extreme sports: bungee jumping, base jumping, gliding, hang gliding, ski jumping, high wire, sky surfing, sky
diving, and sky flying.
Eighteen land sports are classified
into extreme sports: adventure racing, indoor climbing, BMX, aggressive inline skating, motocross, caving,
freestyle skiing, extreme skiing, land and ice yachting, mountain boarding, mountain biking, outdoor
climbing, skateboarding, sandboarding, snowmobiling, snowboarding, speed skiing, speed biking, scootering and
street luge.
Fifteen water sports are classified
into extreme sports: barefoot water skiing, free-diving, cliff diving, jet skiing, powerboat racing, open
water swimming, scuba diving, round the world yacht racing, snorkeling, surfing, speed sailing, whitewater
kayaking, wakeboarding, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.
Some of the extreme sports have
existed in our society for decades, like, rock climbing and ice climbing. Who doesn't know the names of
Edmund Hillary, Chris Bonington, Wolfgang Gullich and Joe Simpson. Surfing was invented by the inhabitants of
Hawaii centuries ago.
