In the High Lift Tailgate format the pneumatic rams lift the gate open and up above the dump body.

A standard dump truck in the United States is a six wheeler with one powered rear axle or a ten wheeler with two powered rear axles or a tri-axle with two powered axles and one lift axle or the quad with two powered axles and two lift axles. Lift axles can be raised off the pavement when the truck is lightly loaded or unloaded and can be lowered to load the truck heavily. So, lift axles, when raised, minimize wear and tear and when lowered, provide extra support to the truck. The largest dump truck has seven axles and is commonly called a "centipede". It has seven axles; rear two are powered, the front one is the steering axle, and the remaining four are lift axles.

The higher capacity semi-trailer dump trucks are less maneuverable than a standard dump truck due to the large wheelbase.

In the construction world "Yuke" or an articulated dump truck is different from semi trailer trucks in that its cab is not a separable vehicle but a permanent fixture.

A S.D.T. or side dump truck is a 3-axle tractor that pulls a 2-axle semi-trailer.
