Circus Party Supplies
Circus Party Supplies is one of the most
popular kids' birthday party themes of all times. So, if you were searching for Circus Party Supplies you've landed on the right
page.
Circus Party Supplies are based on circus, a
traveling company of performers. There are clowns, acrobats, musicians, hoopers, jugglers, unicyclists, tightrope
walkers, trained animals, trapeze acts, in a circus. A circus may include other stunt-oriented artists as well. The
word circus may also mean the performance by the circus artists. The acts of the circus are introduced by a
ringmaster and are normally performed in the background of music. Normally a circus is performed in a circular or
oval ring and has tired seating. Traveling circuses use a large tent and their arena is also oval or
circular.
The word circus has derived from Latin
"circus", which got derived from Greek "kirkos", which in turn got derived from Homeric Greek "krikos", meaning
being "ring" or "circle". The word was first approved in the English language in 14th century.
The origin of the circus goes back to Ancient
Rome, where there was a building for the exhibition of horse and chariot races, staged battles, equestrian shows
and acts of trained animals, acrobats and jugglers. The Roman circus building had tiered seats and the lower
seats (they were closest to the arena) were used for the people of rank. It was the only public event in Ancient
Rome where men and women were not separated. Circus Maximus was the very first circus in Rome and was initially
made of wood only. It was made in the valley between the Palatine and Aventine hills. It was rebuilt several times
and the final version was made of stone, was 400 m long and 90 m wide and could seat 250,000 spectators. There were
Circus Flaminius, Circus Neronis and the Circus of Maxentius too.
The modern circus has been existing since the
late 18th century. The main person responsible for making circus popular in England was Philip Astley from London
and the first performance of his circus was held January 9, 1768. He is said to be responsible for bringing trick
horse-riding into a circus. Another gentleman, John Hughes, set up "Royal Circus" in Lambeth, London and included
tumblers, tightrope-walkers, jugglers, performing dogs, and a clown. He did so to fill time between his own
demonstrations which were the main attractions of the act, but in doing so he laid foundation to the modern
circus.
The person who brought the first modern circus
to the United States was Englishman John Bill Ricketts. He started his career in the 1780s with Hughes Royal Circus
in London and in 1792 he came from England and established his circus in Philadelphia. Ricketts gave America's
first complete circus performance on April 3, 1793 in Philadelphia. Later George Washington attended a
show.
In the 1810s and 1820s the Circus of Pepin and
Breschard traveled from Montreal to Havana and building circus theatres in most of the cities it visited. The first
American to operate a major circus in the United States was a native New Yorker, Victor Pépin. A wider popularity
to the circus in the United States was provided by the establishments of Purdy, Welch & Co., and of van
Amburgh. The first circus owner to use a large canvas tent for the circus performance in America was Joshuah Purdy
Brown, the year being 1825. The most popular clown of the time was Dan Rice, a circus pioneer. P. T. Barnum and
William Cameron Coup revolutionized the American circus. It was Coup who first used trains to transport the circus
from town to town.
Thomas Cooke brought a circus tent to England
in 1840. Italian Giuseppe Chiarini, and Frenchmen Louis Soullier and Jacques Tourniaire introduced the circus to
Latin America, South East Asia, South Africa, Australia, China and Russia. In 1927 the USSR established the Moscow
Circus School. Here the performers were taught acts using gymnastics abilities. in the 1950s the Moscow State
Circus company began international tours and its artistic skill and originality were widely appreciated. The high
quality of the Russian circus continues till date.
Today the circus combines theatrical
techniques and traditional circus skills. The contemporary circus originated in the West Coast of the United
States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and France. Since 1974, The International Circus Festival of
Monte-Carlo has been awarding international awards for circus performers. The most successful circus company is the
Canadian circus company, Cirque du Soleil. The company's show has been seen by nearly 90 million people in over 200
cities on five continents and its annual revenue exceeds US$810 million.
Today the acts in circus may include
acrobatics, tumbling, trampoline and other gymnastics acts, trapeze, aerial silk, corde lisse and other aerial
acts, contortion, stilts and juggling. Juggling is one of the most popular and common acts in a circus. Acts like
plate spinning or the rolling globe require the combination of juggling and gymnastics abilities (equilibristics).
Clowns cannot be separated from the circus and are skilled in many circus acts. The most famous and popular clowns
are Austin Miles, the Fratellini Family, Emmett Kelly, Grock and Bill Irwin.
Human cannonball, knife throwing, magic shows,
chapeaugraphy, fire eating, breathing and dancing, sword swallowing, strongman and other daredevil stunt acts and
sideshow acts are also parts of some circus.
The best known circus buildings where regular
performances are held are Moscow Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard in Moscow, Circus Krone Building in Munich, Cirque
d'Hiver, Paris, Shanghai Circus World in Shanghai, Hippodrome Circus, Great Yarmouth, Blackpool Tower Circus and
Budapest Circus.
