An enchantress, who is disguised as an old beggar woman, demands a night's shelter from the prince and offers a rose in exchange. The prince turns her away. She gets angry and transforms prince into an ugly Beast. She turns his servants into furniture and other household items as well. She hands him a magic mirror that is capable of showing faraway events. She gives him the rose as well, that will bloom until he is twenty-one. Then the petals of rose will start falling. Before the entire rose's petals fall off, he must love and be loved in return, otherwise, he will remain a Beast forever.

Many years later, a beautiful young woman named Belle lives with her father in a nearby French village. Her father, Maurice, is an inventor. Belle loves reading. Gaston, the arrogant local hero, loves her, but she is not interested in him.

Maurice invents a wood-chopping machine. He sets off to a fair to display the machine, but is lost in the woods and reaches the Beast's castle. There he meets the transformed servants Lumiere, Cogsworth and Mrs. Potts with her son Chip. The Beast puts Maurice in the prison.

Meanwhile, Gaston proposes Belle for marriage and she rejects him. Maurice's horse takes him to the castle where she asks the beast to imprison her in place of her father. The beast agrees and sets Maurice free. He goes back to the village and tells everyone about the incident but all of them think that he has gone mad. Maurice now decides to rescue Belle by himself.

In the castle, the Beast asks Belle to dine with him but she refuses. She finds the rose in the castle but the Beast chases her away. Belle is frightened and escapes from the castle. But some wolves attack her and the Beast saves her. Belle nurses his wounds and they become friends. Later, they dine and dance. The Beast allows her to use his magic mirror and she views that her father is dying in the jungle.

The Beast sets her free although only some hours are left before the rose wilts. He also gives her the mirror to remember him by. The servants are horrified; they fear that they will never be human again. The Beast admits to Cogsworth that he has fallen in love with Belle.

Belle takes Maurice home. Belle shows the Beast in the mirror and proves Maurice sane. But when she calls Gaston a "monster" and tells him that the Beast is her friend, he collects a mob to attack the castle. He locks Belle and Maurice, but Chip chops the basement door apart with the help of Maurice's machine.

Gaston attacks the Beast. The Beast is so sad and depressed that he cannot fight back. But when he sees Belle, he fights and wins but spares Gaston's life. He goes to Belle but Gaston attacks him from behind and stabs him but loses his balance and falls from the balcony and dies.

As the Beast is dying, Belle says that she loves him. And thus the spell breaks before the last petal drops from the rose. The Beast becomes human along with the servants. He kisses Belle.
