And Batman took birth.

Soon after his introduction, Batman became a very popular character among children, teenagers and adults alike, and in 1940, batman gained his own comic book title. Since then, Batman has become a cultural icon. Batman based toys are being sold all over the world. There have been radio and television series and video games. There have been Batman movies as well.

Batman is actually an American millionaire (who was later depicted as a billionaire) playboy whose real name is Bruce Wayne. He is an industrialist as well as philanthropist. As a child he has witnessed his parents' murder and he has decided to take revenge. He is against all sorts of crime and is a great supporter of justice. He trains himself hard, physically as well as mentally (intellectually). For fighting crime he wears a bat-themed costume. The background of the storyline is a fictional city, Gotham.

Batman portrays himself as a superficial and irresponsible playboy who lives off his family's personal wealth. This wealth has come from investment made by his family in Gotham real estate before the city was a bustling metropolis. The wealth also comes from the profits of Wayne Enterprises, a major private technology firm that is inherited by Wayne.

Wayne is actually a teetotaler and works hard to maintain his physical fitness and mental acuity, but to cover up his secret identity he pretends to be a heavy drinker. The drinks he takes are ginger ale. He often acts dim-witted and self-absorbed. Wayne is also shown to contribute a lot to charity through Wayne Foundation. Wayne Foundation is a charity dedicated to helping the victims of crime and thus preventing people from becoming criminals.

There are other supporting characters as well in the storyline: Batgirl - the heroine, Robin - Batman's partner in his fight against crime and injustice, Alfred Pennyworth - his butler, Jim Gordon - the police commissioner and many more.

Most of the superheroes possess superpowers, but not our Batman. He fights and solves crimes using his detective abilities, his intellect, wealth, science and technology, fighting skills including martial arts and his will-power and obsession. To uphold the law he sometimes breaks the law himself.
