There are five players from each team on the field. Unlimited players can be substituted when the game is not in the action. Teams have coach, assistant coaches, managers, statisticians, doctors and trainers. Team coaches can request a limited number of clock stoppages (time-outs). Sometimes, time-outs are mandatory in NBA games. The clock stoppages were used to be of 100 seconds or less, but now, due to the commercial breaks of the television, the duration of the time-outs varies.

The standard uniform for both men's and women's teams is a jersey with a clearly visible number unique within the team that is printed on both the front and back and a pair of shorts. Normally the name of the team and the player is also printed on the dress. At many places, the name of the sponsors is also printed on the uniform.

There are referees to control the game. They keep track of the scoring, timekeeping, individual and team fouls, player substitutions, team possession arrow, and the shot clock.

The basketball court is a flat, rectangular surface, usually constructed from maple planks, that has basketball hoops (baskets) at opposite ends. In the international arena a regulation basketball court is 91.9 ft (28 meters) long and 49.2 ft (15 meters) wide. In the NBA and NCAA games the court is 28.7 m (94 feet) in length and 15.2 m (50 feet) in width. The basketball court usually has the name and logo of the home team painted at the center.

A regulation basketball hoop is made of a steel rim 45.7 cm (18 inches) in diameter. A net is attached to it. The basket is attached to a backboard that measures 182.9 cm (6 feet) by 106.7 cm (3.5 feet). The basket is mounted at 3.05 m (10 feet) height and 121.9 cm (4 feet) inside the baseline.

The official ball size for men's game is 74.9 cm (29.5 inches) in circumference (also known as size 7, or a "295 ball") and weighs 624 g (22 ounces). For women the official basketball size is 72.4 cm (28.5 inches) in circumference (Known as size 6, or a "285 ball") and weighs 567 g (20 ounces).

Each team tries to outscore one's opponents by shooting the ball through opponent's basket. This scoring is called a shot. A shot scores two points. If the shot is taken from beyond the three-point arc it is worth 3 points. The 3-point arc is 20 ft 6 in (6.25 meters) from the basket in international games and 7.24 m (23 feet 9 inches) in NBA games. The players can travel with the ball while dribbling (bouncing) it. They can also pass (throw) the ball to other players. It is not allowed to carry the ball without dribbling.
