Ballerina Party
Supplies are based on ballerina
(Italian for female dancer). Actually, ballerina is a title used to describe a lead female professional ballet
dancer in a large group. In French, a ballerina is called danseuse. A lead male professional ballet dancer in a
large company is called a ballerino (Italian) or danseur (French).
The word, Ballet, originated from the Latin
word ballare that means "to dance". The word balletto in Italian is a diminutive of ballo that means dance. Ballet
was adopted in French from Italian language and in 17th century, was borrowed by English
language.
Nowadays, any female ballet dancer is now
commonly called a ballerina. But in the earlier days, this title was given only to the most exceptional female solo
performers and was the highest rank. The rank would start with Corps de ballet and then Coryphée, and then Sujet
and finally Prima ballerina (also called première danseuse or première sujet. The male ranking system for ballet
performers used to start with Corps de ballet, then Coryphée, then Sujet, then Premier danseur and lastly Premier
danseur noble.
The Italian ballet masters of the early
Romantic Ballet used to bestowed the title or rank of prima ballerina assoluta on a ballerina who was considered to
be exceptionally talented and better dancer that the standards of other leading ballerinas. Today, the title is
rarely used, and is used to recognize a ballet dancer who pursues ballet dancing as a career. The title is now used
as an honor or respect given to internationally renowned dancers, not a rank.
Ballet is a form of dance, but unlike many
other dances, it is formalized. This dance is known to be originated in the 15th and 16th centuries in the Italian
Renaissance courts. It became popular very quickly and reached the French court of Catherine de' Medici. There it
was developed even further. At the time of Louis XIV in the 17th century Ballet wad arranged into a systematic
code. This codification of the dance made it more popular and elegant. And here the predominance of French in the
vocabulary of ballet took place. At this time, ballet got started getting associated closely with opera. From here,
Ballet spread to other nations. In the 1740s, the Imperial Ballet of the Russian Empire and the Royal Danish Ballet
were founded. And then Ballet quickly spread around the world.
The styles of ballet continued to develop in
the 20th century. Some choreographers helped it change into broader concert dance. Neoclassical ballet was
developed by George Balanchine in the United States. Contemporary ballet and post-structural ballet can be seen in
the work of choreographer William Forsythe in Germany.
Soon, new Ballet companies were formed and are
still being formed: London's The Royal Ballet in 1931, the San Francisco Ballet in 1933, American Ballet Theatre in
1937, The Australian Ballet in 1940, the New York City Ballet in 1948, the National Ballet of Canada in 1951, and
recently the Delhi Ballet in 2002.
