Alvin and the Chipmunks Party Supplies are based on Alvin and the Chipmunks, a 2007 comedy movie. The film is directed by Tim Hill. The movie is based on the animated series of the same name. The movie stars Jason Lee, David Cross, and Cameron Richardson. Voices of Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, and Jesse McCartney have also been used. The movie was produced by Regency Enterprises and Bagdasarian Productions and distributed by 20th Century Fox. The movie was a great financial success. It was made on a budget of $60 million and it grossed $217 million in North America and $361 million worldwide. Alvin and the Chipmunks was the seventh-best selling DVD of 2008 and it grossed over $101 million.

There are three chipmunks, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore. They live in a tree. The tree is cut down and transported to Los Angeles and along with the tree, the chipmunks too reach L.A. In L.A., they meet a struggling songwriter David Seville. JETT Records executive Ian Hawke, who is also David's old college roommate, has rejected his latest song. He also once had a relationship with Claire Wilson, his next door neighbor.

The chipmunks wind up at Dave's interview and from there they jump his basket and reach his home. There Dave discovers the Chipmunks but he is accidentally knocked unconscious. When he comes back to his senses, he kicks them out. But when the chipmunks start singing "Only You (And You Alone)", he changes his mind and offers them a deal. The deal is that the chipmunks will have to sing the songs he writes and in exchange they will get food and shelter.

But chipmunks are chipmunks. They ruin Dave's job presentation by their coloring on it. Claire rejects Dave when she comes to know about the talking chipmunks. The chipmunks are sorry for Dave and decide to make it up to Dave. They go to Ian to try to record a song and win a record deal.
 Once Ian hears the
chipmunks singing Dave's song, he is quite impressed and he signs them. Next day he also rehires Dave.

The Chipmunks become wildly popular after a few singles. Dave is concerned for the Chipmunks' well-being and suggests that they should avoid so much craziness as they are just kids. But Ian tells Chipmunks that Dave wants to hold them back. Later, Dave tells the Chipmunks to go live with Ian if they liked and trusted him so much. The Chipmunks leave Dave and start living with Ian.

At first, they love Ian. He takes them on a coast-to-coast tour and starts taking advantage of them. He changes their image and makes them work constantly. Dave is now missing Alvin and the Chipmunks. He wants to bring them back. He calls up Ian to talk to them but Ian won't let him talk to the Chipmunks. Later, it is all over the news that the Chipmunks are wearing out. Dave, now, decides to do something himself to save the Chipmunks.

A doctor tells Ian that the Chipmunks' voices have given out and they can not sing. Ian does not want to hand out the refunds. He orders that the Chipmunks will have to lip sync. Dave, with Claire's help, sneaks into the concert. But he is caught and the security guards drag him out. But the Chipmunks see Dave and they ruin the concert by revealing that they were lip-syncing.

Just at the moment when Dave is about to rescue them, Ian catches them and locks them in a cage and decides to take them to Paris. He runs away in his limo and Dave chases him. They both do not realize that the Chipmunks have already escaped from Ian's car and now are in Dave's car. When Dave sees them, he stops the car and tells them that he loves them and they are his family.

When Ian looks for the Chipmunks, he finds merchandising dolls instead.

Alvin and the Chipmunks are now fully accepted as part of Dave's family, but still, they are creating accidents in Dave's household.

Ian is now unemployed and is unsuccessfully trying to make three squirrels sing.

In the movie, Jason Lee is cast as David Seville, Cameron Richardson as Claire Wilson, David Cross as Ian Hawke, Beth Riesgraf as Mother in Store, Jane Lynch as Gail, Frank Maharajh as Barry and Adriane Lenox as Vet. Alvin is voiced over by Justin Long and Ross Bagdasarian, Jr. sings for him. Simon is voiced over by Matthew Gray Gubler and Steve Vining sings for him. Theodore is voiced over by Jesse McCartney and Janice Karman sings for him.
