Airplanes Party Supplies
Airplanes Party Supplies is one of the most popular kids' birthday party themes of
all times. So, if you were searching for Discount Airplanes Birthday
Party Supplies you've landed on the right page.
Airplanes Party Supplies are based on airplanes, aircrafts capable of
flight. Airplanes are also called Aeroplanes or simply planes. Airplanes can fly because of the forward motion
that creates lift as the wing moves through the air. There are unpowered airplanes as well, like the gliders,
that warm-air pockets or thermals to generate lift. Airplanes are generally flown by a pilot, but some are
remotely or computer controlled.
The word aeroplane is derived from the French
aéroplane which, in turn, is derived from Greek aēr, meaning air and planos, meaning wandering. The literal meaning
of aircraft comes to "wandering in air". The term "airplane" is used in the United States whereas in the United
Kingdom and most of the Commonwealth countries, the term "aeroplane" is used.
Many stories from mythology and legends
involve flight, such as the Vimana in ancient Indian epics and the Greek legend of Icarus and Daedalus. It is said
that Archytas, a Greek philosopher, mathematician and astronomer, had built a flying device around 400 BC. It is
also said that the device had actually flown some 200 m. In the 9th century poet Abbas Ibn Firnas and in the 11th
century monk Eilmer of Malmesbury experimented with gliders. In 1502, Leonardo da Vinci designed a man-powered
airplane in his Codex on the Flight of Birds. Francois Pilatre de Rozier and François Laurent d'Arlandes flew in a
balloon in the 18th century.
In 1853, Sir George Cayley built a successful
passenger-carrying glider. He had been experimenting with flying models of fixed-wing aircraft since 1803.
Cayley is credited as the founder of the science of aerodynamics. Jean-Marie Le Bris, a Frenchman, is credited for
making the first powered flight in 1856, with his glider, "L'Albatros artificiel". He had his glider pulled by a
horse on a beach. John J. Montgomery, an American, made a controlled flight in a glider on 28 August 1883. Otto
Lilienthal, Percy Pilcher and Octave Chanute had also made similar flights during that period.
Sir Hiram Maxim was initially sketching out
the plans for a helicopter, but later he chose wings for his flying machine. In 1889, he built a craft that was 145
feet (44 m) long with a 110 feet (34 m) wingspan; and it weighed 3.5 tons. The airplane was powered by two compound
360 horsepower (270 kW) steam engines that drove two propellers. It was built to test whether it could lift off the
ground. Later, Maxim abandoned work on it.
Australian aviator and inventor Lawrence
Hargrave built the first box kite that could lift the weight of a man in 1890s. His designs were widely adopted and
till 1909, they were the prevalent type of aircraft. On 14 August 1901, Gustave Whitehead flew his engine-powered
airplane for half a mile at 15 m height.
The Wright brothers are credited for "the
first sustained and controlled heavier-than-air powered flight". Their first successful test flights took off on 17
December 1903. Their flights were recognized by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI). By 1905, the
Wright Brothers had developed the Wright Flyer III that was capable of fully controllable, stable flight for
substantial periods.
Alberto Santos set the first world record on
12 November 1906 by flying 220 meters (720 ft) in less than 22 seconds. This is considered as the first airplane
flight unassisted by catapult. The flight is certified by the Aéro-Club de France and the Fédération Aéronautique
Internationale (FAI).
In 1908, Frenchman Louis Bleriot's Bleriot
VIII design brought together the modern monoplane tractor configuration. The airplane had movable tail surfaces
controlling yaw and pitch. His later design, Bleriot XI, came in the summer of 1909.
During the World War I, aircrafts were used as
the machines of war. They were capable of mobile observation as well as causing casualties to the
enemy.
The airplane technology continued to develop
after the war. For the first time in 1919, Alcock and Brown crossed the Atlantic non-stop. In 1927, Charles
Lindbergh performed the same feat, solo. In 1919, the first commercial flights started between the United States
and Canada.
In the Second World War, airplanes played a
primary role. Pearl Harbor, the battles of the Pacific and the Battle of Britain are the
examples.
In October 1947, Bell X-1 exceeded the speed
of sound. The pilot was Chuck Yeager.
In 1952, the first commercial jet, the de
Havilland Comet, was introduced.
Boeing 707 was the first widely successful
commercial jet. It was in service from October 26, 1958 to June 22, 2010.
Boeing 727 was another widely used passenger
aircraft.
Boeing 747 remained the world's biggest
passenger aircraft between 1970 and 2005.
Currently, the world's biggest passenger
aircraft is the Airbus A380.
